Population

What is the population of Haiti? Compare this to the population of the US.

Haiti's estimated population as of July 2013 is  9,893,934 persons. They are ranked the 88th most populated nation in the world (World Factbook). The United States of America has a estimated population of 316,438,601 persons (as of July 2013). The US is ranked third most populated nation in the world (World Factbook).

Where do the people live in Haiti? Rural areas? Urban areas? What are some major cities and their populations?

As of 2010, about 52% of Haiti live in urban areas. (Thus, the distribution between people living in urban and rural areas is relatively constant).  Port-au-Prince, the capital of Haiti, is one of the major cities in Haiti. In 2010, it had a population of 2.143 million (World Factbook). Carrefour, just outside of Port-au-Prince, has a population of 442156 persons (Mongabay.com).

Agriculture

What types of agriculture do they have and what type of diet do they have?

Haiti grows fruits such as mango; grains such as rice, sorghum and corn; as well as cocoa, sugarcane, and coffee. Haiti also harvests wood and vetiver (World Factbook).

Haitians primarily eat rice, corn, millet, yams, vegetables, and legumes. Their diet is heavily influenced by French cuisine, yet utilizes local ingredients such as yams or plantains. Spices such as  ti-malice are used to flavor several Haitian dishes (Foodbycountry.com). (For a detailed look at Haitian cuisine, click here. This site has various Haitian recipes ranging from Christmas treats to breakfast fare.)

Industry and Tourism

Are industry and tourism related to geography and climate?

In many respects, yes. Some of Haiti's industries are flour milling, sugar refining, textiles, and cement. Flour milling and refining sugar are directly related to two of their agricultural crops: sorghum and sugarcane (World Factbook). While Haiti's climate and beaches can attract tourists, political unrest and the aftermath of the 2010 earthquake keeps tourists at bay (The LA Times).

Cultural Activities
Are there any notable historical events that add to the climate/culture story?

Scientists believe that weather conditions may have triggered the cholera outbreak that took 1000 lives. The outbreak occurred in 2010 after the massive 7.0 earthquake (SciDevNet, The World Factbook).
Haiti recently was impacted by Hurricane Sandy in 2012, loosing 9.5 of its economy that year due to the severe weather (Yahoo News).
